Switzerland boosts competitiveness
Lausanne – Switzerland has been ranked as the world’s fourth most competitive economy. It has therefore moved up one position in the ranking compiled by the IMD business school in Lausanne. The country scored particularly well for the quality of its infrastructure.
Awards dominated by startups from Greater Zurich Area
Solothurn – Six out of the ten winners of this year’s W.A. de Vigier Award are based in the Greater Zurich Area. This is the oldest and most financially significant award for startups in Switzerland.
Cancer stem cells eliminated in prostate cancer
Lugano – Scientists from the Institute of Oncology Research at the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) have made a breakthrough in prostate cancer research. They have uncovered a novel mechanism for isolating cancer stem cells and have consequently been able to slow down tumor growth.

Climeworks provides CO2 for renewable jet fuel
Rotterdam – A demonstration plant is to be established at Rotterdam The Hague Airport for the production of renewable jet fuel. The fuel will be produced from CO2 captured from ambient air using technology developed by Zurich start-up Climeworks.
Wingtra drones impress investors
Zurich - Wingtra has raised 10 million US dollars in financing round. The start-up manufactures special drones for aerial photography. It wants to use the funds raised to expand its sales globally.
ETH Domain to focus on digitalization
Bern - ETH Domain member institutes should focus more strongly on digitalization. The ETH Board has taken this into account as part of its financial and investment plans for 2020. State funding will be slightly reduced overall, but significant amounts have been sourced from third parties.
Skribble impresses with electronic signature
Zurich – Software developer Skribble has secured a single-digit million figure in a financing round. The startup is developing a solution for legally binding electronic signatures.
Digital art put on blockchain by dloop
Zug – Startup dloop AG from the Crypto Valley has developed an app that allows digital artworks to be distributed and financed. The blockchain-based app will now be integrated in Swisscom TV. This is bringing digital art to the TV screen.
