VirtaMed has launched a new simulation module for meniscus repairs. As the supplier of medical training simulators headquartered in Schlieren in the canton of Zurich writes in a press release, the aim is to “revolutionize” the training of the next generation of orthopedic doctors.
With this module, aspiring surgeons will be able to practice and perform a range of techniques to repair different types of meniscus tears in a risk-free environment by leveraging the benefits of Augmented Reality (AR). The spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) has developed this module in collaboration with the renowned orthopedic surgeon Professor Romain Seil. “VirtaMed’s technology offers a safe and effective way for trainees to practice and refine their skills, without risking harm to real patients”, Seil explains in the press release.
According to VirtaMed, the module builds on the start-up’s previous work that focused on the development of innovative orthopedic training simulators. It offers an “unparalleled level of realism and accuracy”, comments Claude Hoeltgen, project coordinator for VirtaMed. “We believe that this module will help to improve the standard of care for patients”, he concludes.
VirtaMed is headquartered at the IJZ, an innovation and start-up park located in the Greater Zurich Area, and is also a member of Start Smart Schlieren. mm
